The Enemy
Just so that we're all clear, this is the enemy. It's an eastern mole (Scalopus aquaticus), and it's the most common mole in our area. They're relatively small, no longer than your hand and just a few ounces, but as you can see by its forefeet, it's a digging machine! Although moles can help your yard in some ways (by aerating the soil and by eating insects), they're more likely to cause damage because of their incessant tunneling.
They're really kind of cute, in an ugly sort of way. They use their snout to feel where they're going when moving forward, and their tail to do the same when moving backward. Their sense of touch is critically important, because their eyes are small and covered, so all they can really sense are distinctions between light and dark. Beneath their snout is a mouth full of teeth. They eat earthworms primarily, but they also feed on various insects, grubs, and seeds. They can live for several years, so it's smart to start trapping them now!
After graduating from Mole Trap Boot Camp, you'll have the necessary skills and tools to become a successful mole trapper, and if you have questions, you can just post here or send email to frank@moletrapbootcamp.com.
